Common questions
Everything you might want to know before reaching out. If you don't see your question here, just ask.
01Do you take my insurance?
We are in network with some plans and out of network with others, and we do not bill Medicare or Medi-Cal. Tell us your plan and we will check before your first session. The How fees work page has the details.
02What is a superbill, and how do I use it?
A superbill is an itemized monthly receipt you can send to your plan, which may reimburse you; your plan decides. It carries a diagnosis code that your plan will see, and a plan's statements usually go to its policyholder.
03What is a Good Faith Estimate?
If you pay without insurance, you have the right to receive a written estimate of your costs before care begins, and we give you one. If a bill is well above the estimate, you can dispute it. The estimate is not a contract.
04How much does it cost and how do fees work?
Your fee is given in writing before you book. It depends on the length of the session and who is in it. A limited number of reduced-fee sessions are held each month; ask when you write to us.
05Can I use an HSA or FSA card?
Many people can. Your plan sets the rules, so check with your plan administrator.
06What happens in the first session?
A conversation, not a test. You say what you want from therapy and what you would rather leave alone for now. Your clinician explains how she works and what stays private, and you decide whether to go on.
07How often and how long are sessions?
A session is 50 to 60 minutes. Many people start weekly. Your clinician sets the pace with you, and there is no promised number of sessions.
08Are you licensed where I live?
Our clinician is licensed in California. For video sessions you need to be in California when we meet. If you are elsewhere, we are glad to help you look for a clinician in your state.
09What do I do in a crisis?
Call or text 988, any time. In an emergency, call 911. This practice is not an emergency service, and we do not monitor messages around the clock.
10What is private, and what are the limits?
What you say in a session stays between you and your clinician, with limits the law sets: a risk of serious harm to you or someone else, and certain reports the law requires. The page What stays between us explains them.
11Can you see my teen, and how does consent work?
We see teens from age 13. State law decides who can agree to therapy for someone under 18, and the rule that applies depends on age and situation. Your clinician explains it before the first session.
12What is your cancellation policy?
We ask for 24 hours' notice to cancel or move a session. Your fee and cancellation terms are given in writing before you book.
